The first pontiff of the Dwarka Sharada Peetha, also known as the Shardapeeth or the Western Peeth, established by Adi Shankaracharya, was Hastamalaka Acharya. Hastamalaka was one of the four main disciples of Adi Shankaracharya. According to tradition, he was appointed by Shankaracharya himself to head this monastery.

Hastamalaka is highly revered in the Advaita Vedanta tradition for his profound spirituality and deep understanding of the teachings of Shankaracharya. His unique philosophical insights and interpretations are celebrated in the work known as “Hastamalakiyam,” which presents his clear and direct realization of the Self.
