Introduction

Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is a tranquil district in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, celebrated for its lush green landscapes, misty hills, and vibrant coffee plantations. Among the many jewels in Coorg’s crown, the Dubare Elephant Camp stands out as a unique and enchanting destination for nature enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, and those seeking a deeper connection with these gentle giants.

A Natural Haven

Situated alongside the meandering Cauvery River, Dubare Elephant Camp is a serene haven for both elephants and the countless visitors it attracts each year. The camp is nestled in the heart of Coorg’s dense forests and is part of the Dubare Reserve Forest. The lush greenery, scenic landscapes, and the soothing sound of the river create an atmosphere of unparalleled tranquility.

A Thriving Elephant Sanctuary

The primary purpose of Dubare Elephant Camp is to provide a sanctuary for elephants, and it serves as a vital hub for the Karnataka Forest Department’s Elephant Training and Conservation Program. The camp is home to several elephants, many of which have been rescued from different parts of Karnataka and rehabilitated here. These elephants are taken care of by a dedicated team of mahouts (elephant caretakers), who have developed strong bonds with their charges over the years.

Interacting with Elephants

Visitors to Dubare Elephant Camp have the unique opportunity to interact with these majestic creatures in a responsible and ethical manner. You can watch the elephants being bathed, fed, and even participate in these activities. Bathing with elephants in the Cauvery River is a memorable experience that allows you to get up close and personal with these gentle giants, providing an unforgettable connection with nature.

Educational Experiences

Dubare Elephant Camp is not just about experiencing elephants; it’s also about learning and understanding their lives and the conservation efforts undertaken. The camp conducts educational programs that give visitors a chance to learn about the behavior, biology, and ecology of elephants. This helps raise awareness about the conservation of these magnificent animals and their natural habitats.

Flora and Fauna

The surrounding Dubare Reserve Forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Apart from elephants, the forest is home to various other wildlife species, including tigers, leopards, gaurs, wild dogs, and several species of birds. While you may not encounter these wild animals during your visit to the camp, their presence in the region underscores the importance of conservation efforts.

Getting There

Dubare Elephant Camp is approximately 240 kilometers from Bangalore, Karnataka’s capital. The nearest town, Madikeri, is about 30 kilometers away. Visitors can take a scenic drive through Coorg’s winding roads to reach the camp.

Accommodation

While the camp does not offer accommodation within its premises, there are several options nearby in Madikeri and other towns in Coorg. You can find a range of hotels, resorts, and homestays that cater to different budgets.

Important Tips

  • It’s advisable to check the camp’s visiting hours and rates before planning your visit.
  • To ensure the elephants’ welfare and your safety, follow the instructions given by the camp’s staff.
  • During the monsoon season, the camp may be closed to visitors, so it’s best to confirm its status before your trip.

In Conclusion

Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg is a perfect blend of natural beauty, conservation, and education. It offers a unique opportunity to witness the majesty of elephants up close, engage in educational experiences, and support the vital work of the Karnataka Forest Department in preserving these incredible creatures. A visit to this camp is not just an adventure; it’s a chance to connect with nature and take home a deeper understanding of the need to protect the natural world and its inhabitants. Dubare is known for its elephant camp, a forest camp on the banks of the holy river Kaveri in the district of Kodagu in the South Indian State of  Karnataka. It is an important base for the Karnataka Forest Department’s elephants.

The elephants for the Mysore Dussehra festival were once trained at Dubare elephant camp. At present, after logging operations have ceased, the elephants of the camp are practically retired except for giving some pleasure rides to the visiting tourists.

In addition to the elephant training camp, Nisargadhama and Veerabhoomi are the other main attractions of this forest area.

There are opportunities for trekking, elephant rides, fishing, and river rafting as well. These activities are hosted by the local jungle lodges and resorts. The Forest Department also conducts some treks along the well-defined routes.

The moist deciduous forests of Dubare are home to many wild animals and birds. Sights of wild Asiatic elephants are regular and so is the spotting the Sambhar, the spotted deer, tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and Gaur. Bears are also seen in these forests.

Crocodiles can be seen in the river. The forests are also home to many reptiles and non-venomous snakes.

Birdlife in Dubare has peacocks, partridges, kingfishers and woodpecker.

Still water rafting is an enjoyable adventure, which one should just not miss in this place.
