Rajasthan is reckoned as a state of amazingly talented craftsmen, who have created some of the truly beautiful and captivating art- pieces of India.

There are numerous things from the State of Rajasthan to cherish, like Blue Pottery, ivory carvings, wood-carving, Pichwai Painting, miniature paintings & Hand Block Printing to name a few.

Tarkashi is yet another highly admired artifact of the State, which is best suited for gift purposes as well as for personal uses. 

It is a common sight in the antique shops and gift shops of Jaipur to see boxes, tables and trays with brass or copper engraving work. This specific type of art-work is known as Tarkashi work.

Tarkashi utilizes gleaming metal wires (Tar in Hindi), set in the wood to craft some intricate geometric patterns or floral designs inspired from the great Mughals. Tarkashi artifacts are the best gifts to be cherished for a very long time, from the loved ones to the loved ones.

Spreading the magic of their skill, the artisans of Taarkashi painstakaingly inlay brass in wood with great precision and detail.

At the dawn of !6th century, when the city of Jaipur was being conceptualized, craftsmen from all over the country were invited to aid the settlement with their skill.

Beautification of the city was one of the prime visions of its creator, Sawai Maansingh II, and it still continues to attract both artisans and their patrons to visit the city or even live & settle there.

Apart from building Jantar Mantar and many otherbeautiful historical monuments, Sawai Maansingh II also invited many craftsmen across India to fulfill the city’s need.

Amongst these were the artisans of ‘Taarkashi’ as well, who migrated to the city from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. The artisans of Taarkashi have stretched the amazing magic of their fingers in the city through generations. 

Taar means wire in Hindi. The technique of inlaying fine flattened wire of brass, copper or silver in wood is called Taarkashi.  

The patterns inlayed are usually geometric forms or florals with inspirations from Mughal arts. Metal inlay is a painstaking and highly skilled craft.

The artisan transfers a design from a piece of paper onto a block of wood. He then carves deep, thin grooves along the trace.
