The Corporation was established on 20th January 1966 under Companies Act 1956 as a Government Company. The policy making body of the Corporation is the Board of Directors, nominated by the State Government.

The administrative, commercial and financial powers vest with the Managing Director who implements the policies and carries out activities of the Corporation with the assistance of managerial and ministerial staff at Head Office and in the field.

Objectives

The objective of the Corporation primarily was  promotion of exports from the State of Uttar Pradesh. With the inception of Export Promotion Bureau, U.P., in the year 1999, the activities relating to the Export Promotion are now being performed by the Bureau.  

Presently, the main objective of the U.P. Handicrafts Development And Marketing Corporation Ltd is to promote and market handicraft items produced by the artisans of the State.

The U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING CORPORATION is managing chain of GANGOTRI Emporia in major cities of the country i.e. New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Kolkata, Lucknow & Kanpur.

The handicraft items produced by the artisans are showcased and marketed through ‘GANGOTRI’ Emporia.

The U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING CORPORATION is directly associated with Artisans.

By reducing the role of middlemen, the U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING CORPORATION plays a pivotal role in getting the artisans best value for their craftsmanship and their dedicated work.

The Corporation has also developed U.P. Craft-Mart at A-161,Sector-136, Noida to provide opportunity to the handicrafts manufacturers/exporters to market and promote handicrafts of the State.

In the Craft-Mart, 20 showrooms have been built up which are to be allotted to the handicraft manufacturers/exporters on lease basis under prescribed terms & conditions.

Besides these showrooms, 16 stalls are also available in the Craft-Mart for organizing exhibitions on temporary basis. There is also provision for a Food Court in the Craft-Mart. 

The U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING CORPORATION also implements the developmental schemes approved by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Govt. of India. Like for example organizing exhibitions in the country where artisans get opportunity to market their products directly.

The U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING CORPORATION also participates in International Exhibitions where products of the artisans are showcased in order to procure export orders.

Likewise, the U.P. HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING CORPORATION is also running a wood seasoning plant in Saharanpur where facilities of wood seasoning and chemical treatment are provided to the artisans which help improve the quality of their products.
