Alpana or Alpona refers to colourful motifs, sacred art or paintings done on the floor on special auspicious occasions in Bengal, like Puja, wedding or community events . The art typically has great religious significance.

This type of art done on the floor on auspicious occassions,is found in many parts of the Indian subcontinent, in addition to Bengal.

The art is known by different names in various parts of India and its use varies from region to region. The most common type of Alpana all around India is Rangoli.

The art is known as Kolam in South India. The artwork is mainly done by women in different parts of India.

Alpana is very popular in Bengal, Bengalees, by nature, being extremely fond of Fine Arts & Music . Bengalees are conscious of the changing moods of the seasons and their creativity changes with the changing cycle of the year.

Traditionally in Bengal, Alpana is strictly white in colour, since the liquid paste used for Alpana is a freshly ground paste of rice powder mixed with water.

Here are a few glimpses of this great artwork, practised in Bengal, in real Shanthi Nikethan Style. It’s really so beautiful & so different from the South Indian Kolam, in its style.
