There is an ancient story behind Sand Art. The author of Dandi Ramayan, Poet Balaram Das was a great devotee of Lord Jagannath of Puri. Once he tried to climb the chariot of Lord Jagannath during Ratha Yatra to offer his prayer. But he wasn’t allowed by the priests of the chariot to climb it to offer his prayer and was also insulted by them. This made him feel extremely humiliated. He went to the beach and carved the statues of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra on the Golden sand. Then there he started praying and worshipping these statues with utmost devotion. Through the power of his devotion, the story goes, that the original statues vanished from the chariot and appeared at the place where poet Balaram was worshipping.
