Brief Overview

Uppada is a distinguished textile weaving cluster of Andhra Pradesh, renowned for its exquisite Jamdani-style silk sarees that blend delicacy, sophistication, and meticulous craftsmanship. Situated along the coastal belt of East Godavari, Uppada has evolved into one of the finest centers for lightweight silk handlooms in South India.

Uppada Jamdani sarees are celebrated for their sheer texture and intricate extra-weft motifs, laboriously woven directly onto the fabric without the use of sketches or graphs. Inspired by nature—flowers, creepers, paisleys, and geometric forms—the motifs appear to float on the gossamer silk surface, reflecting extraordinary skill and patience. The use of fine silk yarns and subtle zari accents gives these sarees an ethereal elegance, making them especially favored for festive and ceremonial wear.

As a handloom cluster, Uppada supports a close-knit community of master weavers and artisans whose knowledge has been transmitted across generations. The cluster has earned Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognizing its unique weaving technique and regional identity. Today, Uppada stands as a testament to Andhra Pradesh’s rich handloom legacy, where traditional Jamdani aesthetics harmonize with contemporary design sensibilities.
