Thirunageswaram Naganathar Temple is a famous Shiva temple located in Thirunageswaram, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The temple is particularly well-known for its association with Rahu, one of the nine planetary deities (Navagrahas). It is part of the Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Rahu.

  1. Presiding Deity: Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Naganathar, and Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Piraiyanivanudalumai (Giri Gujambika).
  2. Rahu Sthalam: This temple is one of the most significant temples for Rahu dosha nivarthi puja. Unlike other temples, here Rahu is seen with his consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni.
  3. Unique Milk Abhishekam: When milk is poured on the idol of Rahu during abhishekam, it miraculously turns blue. This phenomenon is witnessed by thousands of devotees.
  4. Architecture: The temple is a Chola-era structure with magnificent gopurams, large temple tanks, and intricately carved pillars.
  5. Legends:
    • It is believed that the serpent Adishesha and other nagas (snakes) worshipped Lord Shiva here, which is why the place is called Thirunageswaram.
    • King Bhagiratha and Sage Parashurama are also believed to have worshipped here.
