Overview & History
The Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, is one of the oldest fine arts societies in India. It was formally established in 1933 by Lady Ranu Mukherjee (née Priti Adhikary), a noted art patron. Initially, the Academy operated out of a room loaned by the Indian Museum, and exhibitions were held in adjoining verandahs.
In the 1950s, with support from leaders like Dr. B.C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Academy moved to a larger premises on Cathedral Road, in the heart of Kolkata.

The Academy of Fine Arts is located at 2, Cathedral Road, Kolkata, near the Maidan area, close to landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Rabindra Sadan–Nandan cultural complex.
The building houses multiple art galleries, exhibition halls, an auditorium, and a conference centre. The galleries together provide around 6,300 square feet of display space, making it one of the premier venues for art exhibitions in eastern India.
Collections & Exhibitions
The Academy holds an impressive collection of paintings, textiles, and art objects, many of which were gifted by Lady Ranu Mukherjee. It houses works by renowned artists such as Gaganendranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Abanindranath Tagore, and Nandalal Bose.
A major attraction within the Academy is the Rabindra Galleries, which feature original paintings, letters, and notebooks of Rabindranath Tagore, along with personal artifacts associated with him and Lady Ranu. The Academy also supports rotating contemporary art exhibitions, giving young artists a platform to showcase their work.
Theatre & Cultural Role
The Academy’s theatre auditorium has been a significant cultural landmark in Kolkata since its inception. Since 1984, it has hosted an annual theatre festival and continues to be a popular venue for performances by leading theatre groups such as Bohurupee and Nandikar.
Legendary theatre personalities including Utpal Dutt, Soumitra Chatterjee, Shaoli Mitra, and Manoj Mitra have all staged performances at the Academy, adding to its legacy as a vibrant cultural hub.
Current Challenges & Legacy
Over the years, the Academy of Fine Arts has faced challenges due to the emergence of newer, commercially driven galleries and cultural spaces in Kolkata. Some of its valuable collections remain under-exhibited due to financial and infrastructural limitations.

The nearest metro station is Rabindra Sadan, located within walking distance from the Academy of Fine Arts.
Travellers from Dum Dum can take the metro directly to Rabindra Sadan, which takes around 20–25 minutes.
Those coming from Dakshineswar can reach Rabindra Sadan by metro with a short transfer, taking approximately 35 minutes.
By Train / Rail / Bus
From Sealdah Station, visitors can take a bus, metro, or taxi to reach the Academy. Buses such as S-44 and others frequently travel to the Rabindra Sadan area.
Numerous city buses pass through or near Maidan and Cathedral Road, from where the Academy is only a short walk away.
By Car / Taxi / Private Vehicle
The Academy of Fine Arts lies in central Kolkata in the Maidan and Cathedral Road area, making it easily accessible by car or taxi.
Visitors can drive directly to “2 Cathedral Road, Kolkata.” However, parking space within the premises may be limited, so it is advisable to park nearby and walk in.
