Introduction to Tansen Sangeet Samaroh, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh
The Tansen Sangeet Samaroh, held annually in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most prestigious and iconic music festivals dedicated to the memory of Mian Tansen, the legendary musician and one of the nine jewels (Navratnas) in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. A glorious tribute to Indian classical music, this festival brings together renowned vocalists, instrumentalists, and dancers from across the country and beyond, who gather to perform at the tomb of Tansen, situated in the serene complex near the dargah of his spiritual mentor, Mohammad Ghaus.
Organized by the Madhya Pradesh Sanskriti Parishad and supported by the Department of Culture, Government of Madhya Pradesh, the Tansen Samaroh celebrates the rich legacy of Hindustani classical music. Over several evenings, the air of Gwalior resonates with soulful ragas, intricate compositions, and evocative performances that reflect the timelessness of India’s musical heritage.
The festival also honors contemporary maestros with the Tansen Samman, a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding contributions to Indian classical music. The Tansen Sangeet Samaroh is not just a cultural event; it is a sacred confluence of tradition, devotion, and artistic excellence—drawing connoisseurs, students, and lovers of music into its vibrant fold every year.
