Shri Girnar Jain Temples in Gujarat are among the most revered pilgrimage sites in Jainism, second only to Shikharji. Located atop Mount Girnar near Junagadh, these temples are deeply significant, especially for followers of the Śvetāmbara sect.
Spiritual Significance
Mount Girnar is considered sacred as it is believed that Lord Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara, attained Keval Gyaan (omniscience) and Moksha (liberation) here. The site also marks the place where he took his vow of renunciation, known as Diksha Kalyanak .
Temple Complex
The temple complex comprises over 16 intricately carved temples, primarily constructed in the Māru-Gurjara architectural style. The most prominent among them is the Neminath Jain Temple, originally known as Karnavihara, built in 1129 CE. This temple features a central shrine, a principal hall, and an outer hall, all situated within a large courtyard surrounded by numerous shrine cells .
Pilgrimage Journey
Pilgrims undertake a challenging ascent of approximately 10,000 steps to reach the temples, symbolizing a journey of spiritual elevation. The path is dotted with various shrines and rest spots, offering moments of reflection and devotion .
