Introduction
Sarnath, a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site in Uttar Pradesh, India, is one of the holiest places in the world for Buddhists. Located just a few kilometers from Varanasi, this ancient site holds immense spiritual and historical significance as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Known as the Dharmachakra Pravartana (the turning of the wheel of Dharma), this sermon laid the foundation of Buddhism, setting in motion the path of righteousness and wisdom.
Rich in archaeological and religious heritage, Sarnath is home to several important monuments, including the majestic Dhamek Stupa, which marks the exact spot of Buddha’s first sermon, the Chaukhandi Stupa, which commemorates his meeting with his first five disciples, and the Ashokan Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka to honor the spread of Dharma. The site also houses the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, a modern Buddhist temple adorned with exquisite murals depicting the life of Buddha, and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum, which preserves priceless relics, including the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka, India’s national emblem.
