Rani Rashmoni’s Janbazar Rajbari – A Timeless Bonedi Bari Celebrating Durga Puja in Grand Tradition

The Heritage Home of a Visionary

The Janbazar Rajbari, once the stately residence of Rani Rashmoni, the legendary philanthropist and founder of Dakshineswar Kali Temple, stands as a majestic reminder of Kolkata’s aristocratic past. Located on SN Banerjee Road in Central Kolkata, this grand mansion continues to echo the city’s cultural and spiritual vibrancy.

A Bonedi Bari of Legendary Durga Puja

Rani Rashmoni’s house is renowned for its age-old Durga Puja celebrations, which remain one of the most iconic among Kolkata’s bonedi bari (aristocratic family) Pujas. The Puja began during Rani Rashmoni’s lifetime and, after her passing in 1861, her descendants have faithfully carried forward the tradition.

Here, the rituals, music, attire, and customs retain their original sabeki (traditional) charm. The family continues to worship the goddess in the “Ekchala” idol style, decorated with exquisite Daaker Saaj—silver foils once imported from Germany. Each courtyard of the vast mansion hosts its own Puja, maintained by different branches of the family, such as the Hazras, Biswases, and Choudhurys, adding a rich, multi-layered legacy to the celebrations.

A Living Symbol of Heritage and Faith

The Janbazar Rajbari Durga Puja is not just a religious festival but a living expression of Kolkata’s cultural continuity and devotion. Even today, visitors and heritage enthusiasts throng the Rajbari during the Puja days to witness rituals that have remained unchanged for over a century. The sound of the dhaak, the fragrance of incense, and the traditional chants recreate an atmosphere that transports one back to the golden age of Bengal’s bonedi families.
