Nellaiappar Kovil, located in the heart of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most magnificent and ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This grand temple, also known as Nellaiappar Temple, stands as a testament to the rich architectural heritage and spiritual legacy of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the largest and oldest temples in South India, dating back over 1,300 years, with contributions from the Pandyas, Nayaks, and Cholas.

The temple complex is renowned for its majestic gopurams (towering gateways), intricately carved stone pillars, sprawling courtyards, and the iconic golden chariot. The musical pillars in the Thousand Pillar Hall, which produce different musical notes when struck, highlight the architectural genius of this temple. Nellaiappar Temple is also one of the Pancha Sabhai (five cosmic dance halls) of Lord Shiva, where he is worshipped in the form of Nellaiappar (Shiva) and Kantimathi Amman (Goddess Parvati).

Major Festivals at Nellaiappar Temple, Tirunelveli

1. Brahmotsavam (Aani Brahmotsavam / Aani Therottam)

  • The temple’s grand annual festival, held during the Tamil month of Aani (mid-June to mid-July), features the spectacular Therottam (chariot procession), where a colossal wooden chariot carrying Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi Amman is pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets.
  • The 519th edition took place on July 8, 2025, drawing lakhs of devotees, and is noted as Asia’s third-largest temple chariot procession.

2. Thirukalyanam (Aippasi Tirukalyanam)

  • Celebrated in Aippasi (mid‑October to mid‑November), this festival marks the divine wedding of Lord Shiva (Nellaiappar) and Goddess Parvati (Kanthimathi Amman).

3. Arudra Darisanam

  • A deeply spiritual observance celebrating Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance, drawing large gatherings of devotees.

4. Navaratri

  • Nine nights honouring the divine feminine, featuring cultural performances and devotional rituals.

5. Thaipoosam Festival

  • Occurring in Thai (January–February), this festival sees deities taken for special rituals at the riverbank (Tirthavari), before returning to the temple.

6. Tamra Sabha Natyanjali

  • A classical dance festival staged in the Tamra Sabha, the sacred “copper hall” where Lord Shiva is said to have performed his cosmic dance. Renowned dancers present Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi and more in tribute.
