Introduction
The Hutheesing Jain Temple, located in the historic city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, stands as a magnificent symbol of Jain devotion, artistic brilliance, and architectural excellence. Dedicated to Lord Dharmanatha, the 15th Tirthankara of Jainism, this sacred shrine was built in 1848 AD by Sheth Hutheesing Kesarisinh, a prosperous Jain merchant from Ahmedabad. Following his untimely demise, the construction was completed under the patronage and supervision of his wife, Shethani Harkunwar, showcasing her unwavering commitment to both faith and philanthropy.
Constructed during a period of devastating famine in Gujarat, the temple’s development not only served a spiritual purpose but also provided much-needed employment to hundreds of skilled artisans and laborers, making it a compassionate initiative amid crisis. This dual legacy of piety and public service continues to elevate the temple’s reputation even today.
The Hutheesing Jain Temple is an exquisite example of Māru-Gurjara architecture, a style celebrated for its intricate stone carvings, ornate columns, delicately sculpted domes, and detailed toranas (arches). Built entirely out of pristine white marble, the temple features a central sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) housing the idol of Lord Dharmanatha, surrounded by 52 smaller shrines (devakulikas), each dedicated to various other Tirthankaras and revered Jain deities.
A striking architectural feature of the temple complex is the 78-foot tall Manastambha (column of honor), a free-standing pillar erected in the courtyard. Inspired by the Kirti Stambha of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, this tower stands as a symbol of reverence and victory of spiritual knowledge over worldly attachments.
Located just outside Delhi Darwaza in the Bardolpura area of Ahmedabad, the temple is easily accessible and remains a cherished landmark for both locals and visitors. Open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the temple welcomes devotees and tourists alike, although photography inside the temple is restricted to preserve its sanctity.
With its serene ambiance, divine aura, and awe-inspiring artistry, the Hutheesing Jain Temple continues to be not only a spiritual haven for Jain devotees but also an enduring treasure of India’s architectural and cultural heritage.
