Celebrating Karthigai Deepam at Home in Tamil Nadu

Illuminating Hearts and Homes with Rows of Divine Lamps

Karthigai Deepam, one of the oldest Tamil festivals, is celebrated with great devotion in Tamil Nadu, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. It is observed in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November–December), on the full moon day when the star Krittika is in ascendance. At home, this beautiful festival is celebrated in a deeply spiritual and aesthetic way.

On the day of Karthigai Deepam, homes are cleaned and decorated with vibrant kolams (rangoli) drawn at the entrance. As dusk approaches, rows of agal vilakkus (earthen oil lamps) are lit with gingelly oil and cotton wicks. These lamps are placed in front of the house, on window sills, balconies, verandahs, and even along the parapets, turning the home into a glowing sanctuary of light.

A special neivedyam (offering) is prepared, which includes appam, pori (puffed rice), nel pori (a special kind of puffed rice), jaggery-based sweets like adhirasam, and aval (beaten rice). These are offered to Lord Shiva, Lord Murugan, and Lord Vishnu, as the lamps are lit with heartfelt prayers.

In some homes, bhajans and Karthigai Deepam slokas are recited as family members come together in the evening to light the lamps, creating a serene and sacred atmosphere. For many families, this festival is not just about lighting lamps but also about kindling inner light—fostering unity, warmth, and spiritual reflection.

Karthigai Deepam, though celebrated in temples like Thiruvannamalai with great grandeur, finds its most touching and intimate expression in the glowing lamps of Tamil homes, connecting generations through tradition and devotion.
