Celebrating Bhogi Pandigai at Home in Tamil Nadu

Bhogi Pandigai, observed on the first day of the four-day Pongal festival, is a day of cleansing and renewal in Tamil households. The celebration begins early in the morning with cleaning and decluttering the home, where old and unwanted household items are discarded, symbolizing the removal of negative energies and past burdens. These discarded items are often burned in a small bonfire, known as Bhogi Mantalu, in front of the house, accompanied by joyous cries of “Pongalo Pongal!”

Homes are then washed, decorated with kolams (rangoli) made of rice flour, and adorned with fresh flowers and mango leaves. Family members take an early oil bath, wear new clothes, and offer prayers to Lord Indra, the god of rain, for abundance in the coming harvest season. Special dishes like ven pongal, sakkarai pongal, and other traditional sweets and savories are prepared and shared with loved ones. The day sets the tone for the festive days ahead, embracing hope, prosperity, and new beginnings.
