Origins & Founder
- The Brahma Kumaris movement was founded in 1936-37 by Lekhraj Khubchand Kirpalani, later known as “Prajapita Brahma” or “Brahma Baba”.
- It began as Om Mandali, a small group in Hyderabad (now in Pakistan) drawn together by spiritual experiences, meditation and satsangs.
Establishment in Mount Abu
- In 1950, the group relocated to Mount Abu in the Aravalli Mountains of Rajasthan. This was partly due to the partition of India, but also because Mount Abu offered a serene environment more suited for meditation, retreat, and spiritual growth.
- Over time, the headquarters (called Madhuban) was established here — including facilities for spiritual training, meditation, residential courses, and organisational administration.
Purpose & Philosophy
- The Brahma Kumaris University is dedicated to spiritual education, inner transformation, and world renewal. Its aim is to help individuals realise their true self (as soul rather than body), cultivate inner virtues, and thereby contribute to peace, harmony and upliftment in wider society.
- Central to its practice is Rajyoga meditation, study of spiritual knowledge (including “Murli” teachings), and living values such as purity, peace, truth, love and non-violence.
Campus & Facilities
- The campus in Mount Abu is expansive, with various spiritual, residential, retreat, and administrative facilities. Key features include meditation and lecture halls, accommodation for guests and residents, places for silence and reflection, gardens, lakes and infrastructure aimed at self-sufficiency.
- Some highlights: Om Shanti Bhawan (Universal Peace Hall) where large gatherings are held; Gyan Sarovar Vidyapeeth (Academy) for training and outreach; Shantivan for retreats and spiritual gatherings; Peace Park and natural surroundings helping with atmosphere of calm.
Global Reach & Impact
- Though headquartered in Mount Abu, Brahma Kumaris has grown into a global spiritual organisation with thousands of centres worldwide.
- It offers courses, retreats, lectures, and meditation programmes to people of all religions, nationalities and backgrounds. Its work includes spiritual education, moral-values training, conflict resolution, environmental awareness, and inner peace initiatives.
