Introduction to Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar) Temple – Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu

The Arunachaleswarar Temple, also known as the Annamalaiyar Temple, is one of the most revered Shiva temples in India, located in the sacred town of Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshiped here as Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar), this ancient temple is associated with the Agni (fire) element, one of the five sacred Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the five elements of nature.

Sprawling over 25 acres, the temple boasts magnificent Dravidian architecture, with towering gopurams (gateway towers), intricately carved mandapams, and a sanctum sanctorum that houses the presiding deity, Annamalaiyar (Shiva) and Unnamulai Amman (Parvati). The Rajagopuram (main entrance tower) stands at an impressive 66 meters (216 feet), making it one of the tallest temple towers in India.

Arunachaleswarar Temple is deeply connected to spirituality and mysticism, attracting countless saints, yogis, and devotees from across the world. The temple is famous for its Karthigai Deepam festival, during which a massive beacon is lit atop the sacred Arunachala Hill, symbolizing Shiva’s cosmic presence as an eternal flame. Girivalam, the circumambulation of the Arunachala Hill (around 14 km), is a deeply revered practice undertaken by devotees, especially on full moon nights, as a means of spiritual upliftment and divine grace.

Steeped in history, mythology, and devotion, the Arunachaleswarar Temple of Thiruvannamalai is not just a place of worship but a gateway to self-realization, making it one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Shaivites and seekers of truth.
