Konark Dance Festival is a five day dance festival held every year in the month of December mostly from 1st to 5th in the backdrop of Sun temple in Konark, Odisha in India. It is one of the biggest dance festivals held in the culturally rich Indian state of Odisha.
The exquisite ‘Salamander’ or the ‘dancing hall’ of this shrine is truly an architectural wonder. Every inch of its walls has been covered with fine artistic designs of the ancient times.
Musicians playing drums, cymbals and other musical instruments adorn the sculptures in Odissi dance poses.
Many celebrated dancers from all over the country perform at this venue during the annual Konark Dance Festival.
Since 1986, this festival has been organized in the state jointly by Odisha Tourism and Odissi Research Centre to promote worldwide the diverse Indian dance heritage as well as the magnificence of Konark Temple and Odisha as a great tourist destination.
Konark Dance & Music Festival started in the year 1986 at Konark Natya Mandap by its Founder-Director Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. In a sense it can be called the harbinger of the contemporary festivals of Odisha.
The sole aim behind this festival is to bring in many artistes into its cultural family and creating international cultural amity and brotherhood.
This festival has established its own unique identity by bringing in eminent artistes of national and international repute participate and perform.
Odissi, Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and other classical, folk & tribal dances and music of India are performed on the enchanting stage of the Natyashala in the renowned Sun Temple of Konark.
The stage and the atmosphere is magnified by the spiritual and aesthetic flavor, in the natural ambience of casuarinas and cashew trees. This festival is held every year from 19th to 23rd February.
Widely known as the harbinger of the contemporary festivals of Odisha, the Konark Dance & Music Festival is a matchless extravaganza, intended to create international cultural brotherhood and amity, luring many artists from around the world.
Hosted every year, the Konark Dance festival spans for 5 days. The fiesta witnesses participation of the famous classical dance group of national and international repute.
Watching the unrivaled talent from different parts of the world perform Kathak, Odissi, Mohiniattam, etc. is truly a sight to behold. During these 5 days, many other whole night shows and local programs leave the spectators in a state of awe.
