Durga is the Hindu Goddess of valour and victory. The word Durga means  “the inaccessible” or “the invincible”. Durga is a popular fierce form of the Hindu Goddess or Devi. She is depicted with multiple  arms, carrying various weapons and riding a ferocious lion. She is often pictured as battling or slaying demons, particularly Mahishasura, the Buffalo Demon.

For the Goddess-worshipping Shaktas of the Hindus, Durga is the Supreme Goddess. Her triumph as Mahishasura Mardini, Slayer of the Buffalo Demon is the central episode of the great scripture “Devi Mahatmyam”. Her victory is celebrated annually in India in the festivals of Navaratri and Durga Puja.

Durga is a form of Shakthi. The word Shakthi means divine energy/force/power, and Durga is the warrior aspect of the Divine Mother, the Supreme Absolute Godhead.
