Mother Vindhyavasini resides in a sacred shrine in Vindhyachal. Situated on the banks of holy river Ganges, it has been declared as the foremost of all Shaktipeethas of India by the Hindu scriptures.
This Shakti-Peetha is the first and the last Shaktipeetha of all the sacred 51 Shaktipeethas in India.
According to the legend of Srimad Bhagawata Purana, Shri Krishna, born in the womb of Devaki, was sent to the house of Nanda in Gokula across the Yamuna river by Vasudeva overnight to save Krishna from the cruelty of his maternal uncle Kamsa, where Mother Goddess Yoga Maya was born as the daughter of Yashoda & Nanda.
Silently the new-born baby Goddess was brought to the prison in Mathura where Devaki and her husband vasudeva were held captive.
Later, when Kansa heard the news of the birth of Devaki’s eighth child, he reached the prison immediately to kill the new-born baby.
As soon as he tried slaying the new-born girl brought to the prison from gokula dashing the child on the stone, the girl suddenly reached the sky leaving Kansa’s hands, and displayed her divine form and predicted Kansa’s ruthless murder, and from there she finally went flying to the Vindhyachal mountain.
The story comes in the tenth Skanda of the Hindu mythology Srimad Devi Bhagawata.
From this it is clear that Vindhyavasini has been worshiped since very ancient times in India.
The scriptures give a different description of the historical significance of Mother Vindhyavasini. In Shiva Purana, Mother Goddess Vindhyavasini is considered as Sati; in Shrimad Bhagawata Purana, the same Goddess is referred to as Nandaja Devi (daughter of Nanda Baba).
The other names of the Divine Mother, Krishnanuja, Vanadurga etc are also mentioned in the Hindu scriptures.
In this Maha Shaktipeetha of Vindhyachal, worship is done by Vedic as well as Tantrik rituals. It is also mentioned in the scriptures that Supreme Mother, who is the cause of origin of everything in the universe, is not present in her full glory everywhere.
Vindhyachal is the only place where Divine Mother is seen in Her full glory.

Importance of Mother’s flag :
It is believed that in the Sharadiya and Vasanta Navaratri, Mother Bhagawati stays in the pennant above the roof of the temple for nine days. The specialty of this gold flag is that it is known as Surya Chandra Patakini. This mark occurs only in the flag of Mother Vindhyavasini Devi.

Ashtabhuji Devi is seated at the west angle of the Yantra facing north. She protects the devotees in all directions with eight arms while performing all the wishes with her Ashtabhujas.
