Indian culture has actually given birth to various exotic weaving traditions. Paithani of Maharashtra is one of those weaving techniques.

The traditional craft of Paithani dates back to 200 BC, and till date these Sarees are widely worn by Maharashtrian women during weddings, religious and social functions.

Besides, these Sarees are also viewed as the precious possession of a family, as the Maharashtrian mothers-in-law pass these on to their daughters-in-law.

Made from extremely fine silk, Paithani Sarees are considered one of the richest & luxurious Sarees in India.

Paithani  is a variety of Sari, named after the Paithan town in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra in India where the Sari was first made by hand.

Present day Yeola town in the Nashik district of Maharashtra is the largest manufacturer of Paithani Sarees.

Paithani is characterised by borders of an oblique square design, and a Pallu with a peacock design. Plain as well as spotted designs are available. Among other varieties, single coloured as well as kaleidoscopic coloured designs too are equally popular.

In the revival of Paithani weaving, the production was oriented towards export requirements, while Sareess were produced only for wealthy sophisticated buyers.

Paithani evolved from a cotton base to a silk base. Present day Paithani has no trace of cotton. There was a time when silk was imported from China. These days Paithan buys silk from Bangalore.

Due to proximity to the Ajanta Caves, the influence of Buddhist paintings can be easily seen in woven Paithani motifs.    How to identify a real Paithani Saree??

The main element of the Paithani Saree is the completely hand-woven Pallu and border. Woven between the warp and weft threads, these Sarees almost create a mirror image of the face design at the opposite side of the Saree.

This is the difference between handmade and machine-made Paithani Sarees, where the mesh of threads are visible in the reverse side of the Sarees.
