Shiva, as a Yogi, in deep meditation Shiva (meaning “Auspicious One”) is a major Hindu God and is ‘The Destroyer of the Universe / Creation’ or ‘The Transformer’ among the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the Divine. Shiva is considered the Supreme God within Shaivism, one of the three most influential denominations in ‘Hinduism‘.

Shiva is usually worshipped in the form of Lingam. He is described as an Omniscient Yogi, who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash in The Himalayas. He is also described as a householder with His Consort Parvati and two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya.

Shiva has many benevolent as well as fearsome forms. He is often depicted either as a Yogi immersed in deep meditation, or with his wife and children, or as the ‘Cosmic Dancer Nataraja‘. In fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons.

Tāṇḍavam (also known as Tāṇḍava Nṛitya) is a Divine Cosmic Dance performed by Shiva. Shiva’s Tandava is described as a vigorous dance, that is the source of the cycle of Creation, Preservation and Dissolution in Hinduism. While the Rudra Tandava depicts his violent nature, first as the creator and later as the destroyer of the universe, the Ananda Tandava depicts him as blissfully enjoying Dancer.

In Shaiva Siddhanta tradition, Shiva as Nataraja is considered the Supreme Lord of Dance
